Customs at JFK. Do I have to pick my luggage if I have connecting flight?
I am arriving to JFK from Russia and there I have to get another flight to Atlanta. My luggage will be checked in to the final destination.How will I go through the customs? Do I still have to pick my luggage at JFK?

Not if your bag is booked through to Atlanta normally but anything could happen if there is an even higher security alert at JFK.

Yes, you do. It's different than going from the US into Europe. When you arrive in the US, you clear passport control and customs at the first airport in the US. After going through passport control, you go into the customs area and pick up your bags. You need to carry them through the customs checkpoint and then drop them off again to have them delivered to your next flight that they are already checked for. It's usually a pretty simple process, but adds time before you get to your connecting gate.
