Can I book a flight to Birmingham that connects through Atlanta and just get off in Atl w/o legal consequence?
On Delta, it costs less than half the price to book a flight to Birmingham than to Atlanta, even though the flight to Birmingham connects through Atlanta. Is it legal to not complete the flight to Birmingham, and on the return flight, is it okay to just get on in Atlanta?

You can but just make sure your bag is with you and not checked.

get a travel agent to try and book the seats to birmingham via atlanta (not putting it in as a direct route) on that route and cancel off the last sector. you usually find that an airline will reserve seats for particular routes on via routes which are not as popular and remain available despite the first sector not being available at the cheaper fare if that makes sense?! Im pritty sure leagally you cant get off the plane at the mid point but if you only have hand luggage who is to stop and check your ticket? if you have luggage in the hold, its not possible.

On the return there is no problem. But if you only fly half of your trip on your outbound portion, not flying the connection will cancel the remainder of your reservation. It will show you as a no show and your seats will then be cancelled on the remainder of the segments. There wouldnt be legal conscequences. If this is your plan, just dont check a bag because it would be checked through to your final destination. If you get a ticket agent in a good mood they could just short check it and cancel the connecting segment, but when you check in on the return it would show that the ticket has to be repriced and or revalidated. Some agents wouldnt even deal with it and do it as an even exchange, but some of us are sticklers and will re-ticket the fare the right way. It all depends on what kind of fare you have, low discount fares like L, T and U fares are strict and are as is. Some with flexibility like B, H, K, M and Q and then full fare Y's could possibly be able to do this. But read the Terms and Condiditons. It will state if you dont fly one of the segments it will auto-cancel the remaining portion of any unflown segments. On an empty flight, its not hard to grab the seat back, but on full flights you are pretty much S.O.L. Again, on the return it wont matter if you get off in Atlanta just as long as you dont have a checked bag, that will go on to BHM and then you will have to retreive it. BUT if you do this on your outbound segment and only fly 1/2 of the trip then you pretty much make the passenger agreement, or ticket null and void on the return. There are ways to do it and not have issues, it all depends on the agent you are dealing with when you check back in and if they can grab the seats to re-instate the reservation and if those seats are still in the same fare level. Hope that makes sense....gave you more of a yes and no answer, there are personal experiences im sure you will hear that will tell you yes, but from the Delta standpoint, thats the answer. If you dont get on in BHM but check-in in Atlanta, you would have to check in before the flight in BHM closes for check in. Remember there is an hour time change between the cities, and just tell the agent a story that your plans changed and you were closer to Atlanta than BHM at the end of your meeting or some b.s. like that. And they could just cancel the BHM-ATL segment and it not be that big of a deal. If you go to Delta Direct phone bank, which in Atlanta you will more than likely be directed to since the ticket counter has been reserved just for the kiosks, those agents are in call centers all around the US and India, so you could get someone that would take the time to change the fare and reprice it, you could get someone that, again will just cancel the segment at no charge, so it could be a crap shoot. Returning to Atlanta and not continuing, thats no big deal they wont hold you to anything as long as you dont check a bag. You could tell the ticket agent on your return that you will not be continuing on to BHM and just to cancel the segment and your bag will be checked just to Atlanta so that they can release the seat. Hope that doenst sound too redundant.
