Customs and a connecting flight?
I am flying in from Grand Cayman into Miami and then catching a connecting flight to Atlanta. As I understand it, I clear customs in Miami. Is this correct? Also, do I have to pick up my luggage in Miami, take it through customs, and then re-check it, or is this taken care of? And does anybody have an idea as to how long we will need to get through customs and to the gate for the connecting flight?

Yes...upon arrival in Miami you must first go through immigration, then pick up your baggage and clear customs, then recheck your bags for the connecting flight to Atlanta. You should allow *at least* 2 hours between flights to do all this.

You will fly in and go through passport control and customs in Miami. Your luggage will connect with you. The system in Atlanta is you fly in, go through Passport control, go pick you luggage up, go through customs, redrop your luggage off and then go through security. If you have a connecting flight you then just go to your gate. If you are ending, you pick up your luggage. Each airport will be a bit different, but at Altanta you really dont even stand in line with your luggage when you recheck it. You either take it to the one marked connecting flights or the one that says terminating flights. The biggest hassle is passport control. Its a bloody nightmare. Hope your connecting flight to Atlanta isnt close to the time you land in Miami. Good luck

Yes, you will have to claim your baggage and take it through customs yourself. This is done so that customs can inspect your baggage if they want to check into all the shopping you did! When you check in, your bag will be tagged all the way to Atlanta if your flights are on a single ticket. After you get past customs, there should be an "ongoing baggage belt" as you exit the customs area. Drop your bags off there. If your flights are on separate tickets, you will likely have to line up again at Miami to check in for your ongoing flight to Atlanta.
