How does an unaccompanied minor get help in changing planes on an international flight?
I have a nephew (13 years old) from New Zealand who wants to visit, but he would have to change planes in Los Angeles for a Delta flight to Atlanta. He would need somebody who would accompay him through security, customs and all that and check him in to his flight to Atlanta. The staff from Air New Zealand would not check him in and Delta will not pick him up anywhere either. We figured this out already. Does anybody has an idea how to handle this?

I would try contacting the travellers aid department at Los Angeles airport, they maybe able to assist him or at least give you information on who to contact for help. Basically what you need is a meet and assist. (310) 646-2270

Delta requires that all kids under 15 travel as unaccompanied minors...this means the parents must pay the extra fee and the airline is totally responsible for the child and should take him between planes. How did you "figure out" that he would have no help? Call Delta and talk to them about this.

To handle this, you need to find one airline that can do all the flights. You can't do unaccompanied minor if there is a change in air carrier. There are a couple of exceptions, but as a general rule, a single carrier from start to finish. I know there are even more restrictions when it comes to international flights Either that or someone will have to fly to LA and meet the boy, then the 2 of them can fly back to Atlanta. @Charlie: Read the info. The trip changes airlines. The boy starts with Air New Zealand but then switches to Delta.
